There are many people in power in many places through out the book (The Hobbit). The Elves, Men, Goblins, Trolls, Dwarfs, Spiders, and Orcs all have a king, and kings possess power. In the Lord of the Rings, Eregoin made rings for all of the kings in these groups. This wasn't just a happy picnic though. The king of evil made a ring to control all rings. This is the ring that Bilbo accidentally finds. To cut a long story short bilbo gets to save the day in his time (with the ring) but he makes life hard for his nephew Froto. In the lord of the Rings books, Froto has to destroy the ring without getting caught. Is he able to do this? Bilbo and Froto are both put into a place of power handling the rinng.
Chapters 1-2
There wasn't much power in the first two chapters. When Bilbo was introduced to Gandalf, he didn't even know who he was since he had not seen him for a while. When he had figured out who this strange man was there definitely was a fun factor, but not really a power factor. In the second chapter however Thorin has shown power in the way he likes to even talk to people. Kind of "ruling the crowd".
Chapters 3-6
The travelers get captured by goblins and Gandalf uses his power or "magic" to kill and distract the goblins. He puts all the fire out in the main chamber so the dwarfs and Bilbo can escape. While they were escaping some of the fast runners caught up to him and grabbed the one carrying Bilbo. Bilbo fell and hit his head on a rock. He lied there for a while and when he woke up he found the ring on the ground, he put in his pocket. The ring turns anyone who wears it invisible. That plays a crucial role in allowing Bilbo to escape safe and sound. Biblo is able to sneak past Gollum along with the Goblins.
Chapter 7-8
As the travelers approached Beorn's house. Gandalf told everyone that he is "skin changer". They saw him in black bear and man form. These are the only forms that we have seen Beorn in. This is powerful in a way. To be able to change appearances is very useful, especially if you are trying to hide, or escape something. Chapter 9
Bilbo uses his foresight to put on his ring and avoid being captured to follow the elves back to where they are keeping the dwarfs. Bilbo helps out the dwarves by sneaking in, and while the guards were a sleep, because of really strong wine he grabbed the cell keys. He freed the dwarves and they managed to escape.
Chapter 10
In this chapter the power of the king is apparent. Also the power of the people in this case. The power of the people helps the king to make a decision on whether to let the elves have their "prisoners" back or to let them stay in the village. The people had already heard that the "king under the mountain" had come back and were getting really excited. To give the "king under the mountain" back to the elves as prisoners would make the lakepeople really unhappy.
Chapter 11
In this chapter the dwarves and bilbo are scaling the mountain. They are at the location where the door should be however they cannot find it. When all hope is lost and they think that the door is gone, Biblo remembers that the sun must set to see the key hole. Just as the sun is going down, they key hole is shined upon. They spot the key hole and insert the key. The door opens, they are in the mountain.
Chapter 12
Bilbo uses the ring's power to sneak into the Smaug's chamber. Once he gets into the chamber he steals a two handed cup, seeing this cup rekindled the dwarfs hope of getting their treasure back.
Chapter13 Bilbo is drawn towards the Arkenstone because of its power.
Chapter 14
Bard uses his power of knowing the language of Thrush to hear where Smaug was the weakest.
